Introduction to the Cover Letter

What Is It?

A cover letter is a letter of application that introduces you, including your skills, abilities, and qualifications, to the prospective employer in a highly targeted and personalized way.

The purpose of your letter is to immediately peak the recruiter's interest, and secure a job interview within the first few seconds of the recruiter looking at your application materials. Because your goal is to immediately secure an interview, this letter is placed on top of all your other application materials prior to submitting them.

In essence, you are creating a personal sales pitch regarding your skills, education and experience. The personal nature of your letter offers something more than the specific details contained in employment applications or a resume – it offers a personal connection. When written correctly, your letter can provide the recruiter with an immediate and compelling interest in getting to know you further, through an interview or a pre-interview phone call.

Why Include One?

Even if a cover letter is not required, including one with your application materials is an excellent way to create a solid and favorable impression with the potential employer. Not only does it demonstrate professionalism, but it also indicates to the recruiter that you are capable of taking the initiative to go the extra mile.

Most importantly, however, your letter is an additional tool for you to use to express who you are and why you are right for the job. It allows you to showcase your skills and uniqueness in a way that an application form does not – as a dynamic, personalized sales pitch!

Never underestimate the power of a well-written letter! Keep in mind it is often the first thing a potential employer sees, and is the first introduction to who you are and whether or not to consider hiring you!

This all-important first impression is made within the first few seconds of looking at your letter. In many cases, it is either a deal-maker or a deal-breaker, so taking the time to learn to do it right is pivotal.
