Meditation is one of the most powerful personal development tools available. It is a transpersonal practice that can free us from the pain of the past and the anxiety of the future.

What Is It?

Contrary to popular thought, meditation is not a method of relaxation, or resting. Instead, it is primarily a method for “waking up” from the dream we are living in.

Typically, our daily lives revolve around things we have done (past) or things we will do (future). Rarely do we live our lives in present time. And in failing to do so, we doom ourselves to living lives of cyclical pain (called samsara), because we tend to regret our pasts and worry about our futures. Rarely are we available to fully enjoy the present, unencumbered by the dramas and storylines we are caught up in.

Very simply put, meditation is the practice of being in the moment. It is the practice of coming face-to-face with “what is” in one’s life, without retreating to the past or escaping to the future.

It requires great courage to face our lives on a moment-to-moment basis without giving in to the habit of creating escape through things like thinking, doing, and daydreaming.


Meditating can be a spiritual, religious, or secular practice. It has been practiced for nearly 5000 years, and is most commonly associated with the traditions of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sufism.


Although the true goal of meditating is to foster present moment awareness, many “side” benefits arise as a result of regular practice. These benefits include:

  • Greater clarity in our everyday lives
  • Increased physical and mental relaxation
  • Reduction in stress levels
  • Greater ability to deal with change, stress, pressure, and other uncontrollable forces in our lives
  • A letting go of anger and resentment
  • Increased self-acceptance & acceptance of others

  • Normalization of bodily functions such as heart rate, blood flow, breathing, and cortisol production
  • Increased immune function
  • Better sleep patterns.

Meditation is a simple, but extraordinary tool that promotes positive change in all areas of our lives – the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels of our being. When we let go of our worry and regret, and face ourselves and our lives in the present moment, our lives naturally become more relaxed and peaceful, and our health, well-being, and outlook on life greatly improve.
